How to Avoid Mistakes When Getting a Plastic Surgery Consultation in Korea|A Doctor’s Essential Pre-Surgery Checklist

I believe your first plastic surgery is especially important.

And if you want to get a good result from your first surgery, a thorough consultation is one of the most important steps.

When I see patients for revision surgery, I sometimes find that what they believed was inside their nose is actually something completely different.

For example, a patient may remember having silicone implants, but a CT scan or the actual surgery may reveal a different type of implant.

For someone having plastic surgery for the first time, it is completely understandable to have limited knowledge about the procedure.

That is why the consultation is so important.

You need to understand what result you actually want and whether that result is realistic for your individual facial features.

First, try to be specific about the look you want.

Instead of simply saying, “I want to look prettier,” think about the details.

For your eyes, what kind of eyelid crease do you want?

For your nose, what shape are you looking for?

The more specific you are, the easier it is to have a meaningful conversation with your doctor.

I also recommend making a list of questions before your consultation.

Some patients worry that bringing a long list might seem excessive.

But from a doctor’s perspective, it can actually make the consultation much more efficient and help us understand exactly what the patient wants.

Reference photos can also be helpful.

You can bring photos of celebrities or results you like.

However, rather than asking to look exactly like one person, try to identify what you actually like about those photos and what they have in common.

Another important point is to look at before-and-after photos together.

Many people focus only on the after photos.

But the before photo is just as important.

You need to see what the patient’s original features looked like and how much they actually changed.

The possible result of plastic surgery can vary significantly depending on each person’s starting condition.

When choosing a plastic surgeon, I also recommend checking whether the doctor is a board-certified plastic surgeon.

It is also worth asking whether the surgeon personally participates in the consultation, surgery, and postoperative care.

During your consultation, ask these questions:

What procedure is best for me? Why is it recommended? What complications can occur? And how would they be managed if they happened?

And there is one more important point.

A good doctor is not necessarily someone who says yes to everything you ask for.

There needs to be a balance between what the patient wants and what the doctor believes will be appropriate for that individual face.

Rather than pushing for an unrealistic result, it is important to understand your facial features and limitations and work with your doctor to find a realistic outcome.

Ultimately, successful plastic surgery is not decided only in the operating room.

Knowing what you want, having a thorough consultation, understanding what is realistically possible, and making an informed decision before surgery are all essential parts of getting a satisfying result.
